UEA Pirates managed to keep the Hurricanes out of the endzone in a disappointing defensive game for the current champions. The game finished 0-0 after extra time with the Hurricanes missing 4 field goals and numerous chances to convert from inside UEA's 20. The defence once again dominated the game yet this week failed to score.
The Hurricanes showed signs of dominating UEA after a number of successful drives and then the team started to self destruct. The team finished with 17 penalties for 130 yards. DT Tim Stone frustrated the Cane's offensive line with a solid performance. Head Coach Robin Burton's Eagle defense looked solid all day.
The Hurricanes defense was led once again by a strong performance from the defensive line and linebackers. Richard Savage had two interceptions once again to lead the team with four in only 2 games. Savage almost scored on his second return but was stopped short at UEA's 10 yard line.
A number of rookies looked strong however during the game. Folu Merriman-Johnson had an incredible 42 yard punt return to light up a frustrating day. DT Martin Waldinger also got stuck in with several tackles for loss. David Ostrega once again took to the bowling alley as Pirate defenders were put down like skittles. Mike Butler made his first catch for the season and QB Seb Sobecki took to the field in hard hitting fashion.
The tie against UEA leaves the team with a lot of work to do if they are to repeat their championship performance. Next week the 'Canes face the Birmingham Lions at Home. The Lions started their season in impressive fashion as they beat Southern Conference favourites Aberystwyth 26-12. The game on Sunday will be the Hurricanes first true test... can the team rise to meet the challenge?
