Match report
From the club's own report · By Christian Steward
In a tight game, the Hertfordshire Hurricanes lost for the first time in two and a half years.
The Hurricanes, with just over half its squad due to injuries, started the game in the best possible way. The opening kick off was run back for a 70 yd touchdown by rookie star Dean Mason on his first ever kick return, 6-0. This fired up the Canes for the remainder of the quarter.
The defence held out, shutting down the Cobras running game quite early. Roberts managed to break through on a few occassions but the Canes managed to limit his damage. The offence then turned it up. Before the end of the half, Cameron set up a drive which saw him rush in for a TD, with Savage adding the extra point. However, the Cobras managed to pull one back with a pass from their QB, and added a 2 point conversion.
The second half saw some exiting football. Dawid Ostrega, the star of the day for the Canes, had over 170yds rushing and 2 TDs. Cameron connected with his Wide Receiver core for over 100 yds on the day, with Savage being the main go to guy with over 50 yds. However it was the Cardiffs passing game that the Canes had trouble with. The Cobra's QB made some great passes at crucial points in the game. In the last 2 minutes of the game the Canes lead 26-22. At third down and 12, the Cobras QB managed to throw under pressure to connect for the game winning touchdown and then connect for the 2 point conversion. With just over a minute left in the game the Canes were unable to reply leaving the final score 26-30.
In a great game of football the Hurricanes gave it their all. They didnt let their winning streak of two and a half years go easily. But all credit to Cardiff who played well.
Special mentions should go to Tony Groden who again lead the team with 11 tackles, and also played Offensive line. Dawid Ostrega for his sensational efforts on Offence and Defence. Huw Stacey for his game winning MVP performance on both O and D line, Neil White, who was promoted to half back on the day, also playing linebacker, to make some great blocks to set up an Ostrega TD. Richard Savage for his play both sides of the ball and the offensive line who played a great game hindered by lots of injuries. The Hurricanes go into next week 1-1 with a home game against Leeds.
