Match report

From the club's own report · By Christian Steward

The final score was 40-14 against one of the best defences in the country. Need I say more? well I suppose I should as there are several players that love to see their name in a match report, including me.

The first quarter got off to an electric start with the canes offence moving the ball on the ground for 60yds from 8 plays, capped off with an Ostrega touchdown. 6-0 The defence then set the tone showing the its old Force 12 dominance, by shutting down the stingers next drive which resulted in negative yardage for Surrey. On came the offence again, drove 73 yds on the ground and was again capped off with an Ostrega blast for a touchdown.

The second quarter saw the awesome stingers running game manage to finally make a first down..but only one. The defence cut there gain to only 8 yds off 7 plays. The offence then went on, drove down field 71 yds, culminating in a great 30 yd run from rookie Dean Mason for a touchdown. Neil White added the extra point in his first ever attempt, (I wouldn't hear the end of it if I didn't mention it) making the score 19-0.

The defence came on and shut them down again, and then the offence came on and drove down field ending with a Cameron pass to Dean Mason in a perfect play for 30 yds and a touchdown. Making the score at the end of the half 25-0.

The 3rd Quarter finally saw some movement from the Stingers offence. Running back Adeyo Ashaye exploited a gap to its full advantage, bursting out for a huge 70 yd touchdown run, finally putting some numbers on the board. Score 25-7. The offence then fired up another gear and carried on where they'd left off. Alex Cameron completed 2 passes to tight end Mike Butler and running back Dean Mason to set up Ostrega's 3rd touchdown of the day.

The stingers immediately bounced back with a touchdown leaving the score 33-14. The final quarter saw the Hurricanes offence fail to score for the first time on a drive. But after another short series from the defence, they were straight back to business ending in a Cameron pass to wide receiver Ben Smith. With Neil White adding the extra point, the final score ended 40-14.

The day was a monster victory for the Canes who are know back on track to reclaim their crown. The Offence couldn't do a thing wrong, the team was finally gelling as a unit. As Dawid "the Believer" Ostrega once said, anyone in the Hurricanes that doesn't want another championship can go home now. We want it, and we want it bad.

Special mentions should go to the Offensive line, who had a near perfect day. Pete Hogben, who had 4 tackles and 3 sacks. Chris Renshaw had a great game at Centre and at inside linebacker/defensive tackle. All the players having to play offence and defence had another great day showing a lot of heart and a hell of a good level of fitness, these include Steve Dennis, Tony Groden and Huw Stacey. Of course I'd have to mention Dawid Ostrega who had another excellent day with 162 yds and 3 touchdowns. But the offensive man of the day was Dean Mason, who had 167 yds rushing off only 16 carries and 70 yds receiving for 2 touchdowns.
