The game
Hertfordshire reached College Bowl XVII by beating the Southampton Stags 49–18 in the Southern Conference Championship on 16 March 2003. It was their fourth Southern Conference title, the first time any BCAFL team had won four. Quarterback Junior Price led a scoring drive on the opening possession, finished by an Andy Cochrane run, and a Southampton turnover deep in their own half soon gave Cochrane another score. The Stags couldn't move the ball against the Hertfordshire defence, and the Hurricanes led 29–6 at half-time.
Nothing changed after the break. Cochrane scored his fourth touchdown of the day, and defensive lineman Ryne Miller returned a fumble 47 yards for another. Southampton scored twice in the second half, but by then the game was long decided. Hertfordshire met Stirling at Dewsbury two weeks later.
