The game
Hertfordshire's fourth College Bowl appearance in six seasons ended in a 22–17 defeat by the Stirling Clansmen at Dewsbury on 30 March 2003. The club's own report called it probably one of the most exciting College Bowls ever. Both sides relied on the run. Stirling's Jon Sutherland, that season's league MVP, gained 190 yards and scored three times. Hertfordshire's Andy Cochrane, the league's offensive MVP, answered with 179 yards and two touchdowns.
Hertfordshire struck first. Junior Price intercepted Gary McNey, and Cochrane finished the short drive from three yards out. Stirling replied late in the second quarter, with Sutherland scoring and Andy Fleming catching the two-point conversion for an 8–7 half-time lead. After a Hertfordshire turnover early in the third quarter, Sutherland scored again for 14–7. Cochrane levelled it at 14–14 with a five-yard run.
Rob Kelly's 23-yard field goal put Hertfordshire 17–14 up with about five minutes left. Stirling came straight back, and Sutherland scored his third touchdown with 3:50 to play. Hertfordshire then drove 78 yards, helped by a face-mask penalty and hard running from Ade Balogun and Cochrane, to within a few yards of the Stirling goal line. Price spiked the ball to stop the clock for one last play, but the referee ruled that time had expired and Stirling took the title.
Head coach Jim Messenger was named the league's Coach of the Year. The Hurricanes went back to Dewsbury a year later and won.
