The game
Hertfordshire's ninth national final ended in a 57–13 defeat by Leeds Beckett Carnegie at Loughborough on 31 March 2019. The Hurricanes had done well to get there at all. They finished fourth in the Premier South with a losing league record, then won two tight away playoff games: 28–27 at Nottingham in the quarter-final and 27–22 at Swansea in the semi-final.
Captain James Schofield's squad was small, with no scholarship or international players, and his father later suggested it may have been the last side of its kind to reach the championship final. Leeds Beckett were a different proposition. They had shut out Birmingham and outscored UWE on their way to the final.
On the day, Leeds Beckett scored eight touchdowns to win their first national title, and their free safety Tyler Broad was named MVP. No written account of Hertfordshire's 13 points has been found yet, but BUCS streamed the whole game and it can still be watched.
It remains the club's most recent appearance in a national final, and it left their record in finals at five wins and four defeats.
